Dry needling treats myofascial trigger points/muscle knots of musculoskeletal conditions by eliciting biochemical changes and local twitch response which breaks the pain cycle, and its goal is to reduce pain, inactivate trigger points to relieve pain or improve range of motion and restore function.
Research studies support that dry needling improves pain control, reduces muscle tension and normalizes dysfunctions of the motor end plates (site at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscle).
It rarely is a standalone procedure. After initial treatment, the effects of dry needling typically last several days.
However, with each additional treatment, patients can expect the effects to last longer each time as a result of ongoing muscle relaxation and a return to regular muscle function.
